Justine Kurland made Girl Pictures between 1997 and 2000, traveling across the United States to photograph teenage girls in natural landscapes. Her color photographs show them camping, swimming, resting, and building fires, away from the domestic settings in which girls were often depicted.
Kurland drew on her own experience of adolescent alienation to imagine girls acting on their own terms. This Aperture edition brings the full project together in one volume and includes an introduction by Hilton Als.
