The first comprehensive survey of women's contributions to type design, originally published by Onomatopee in 2021 and reissued by Set Margins' in 2025. The book opens with a statistical overview of gender representation in the field, followed by biographical essays on female type designers who worked in the 19th and early 20th centuries, women who contributed significantly to the industry yet rarely appear in standard histories of typography. The second section comprises in-depth interviews with 14 women currently working as type designers, including Zuzana Licko, Louise Fili, Veronika Burian, and Indra Kupferschmid, addressing both technical practice and systemic issues of underrepresentation.
The final section presents a showcase of typefaces designed by women, demonstrating the breadth and variety of contemporary work. Editor Yulia Popova has created both a historical corrective and a contemporary assessment of where the field stands today. For type designers, design students, historians of graphic arts, or anyone interested in how gender shapes creative fields and their canons, this is essential reading.
