I Am the Mountain

Steven Weinberg’s picture book I Am the Mountain follows a single landscape through four seasons, narrated by the mountain itself. Each season draws on a different sense: hands dig in winter snow, noses register spring rain and mud, ears follow summer birdsong and thunder, and tongues taste autumn apples and mushrooms.

Weinberg wrote and illustrated the book in watercolor. His full-bleed paintings carry the changing landscape across the pages, with sensory detail taking the place of a conventional plot. His earlier work has received a Caldecott Honor.
