Life Between the Tides is Adam Nicolson's study of the rock pools along the Scottish coast, examining the marine life that inhabits the narrow band between high and low water. Nicolson built a series of pools on his family's land in the Hebrides and spent years observing the creatures within them, from sea anemones and shore crabs to fish and worms, tracing the complexity of ecosystems that most people walk past without a second look.
Nicolson is the author of several works of natural history and landscape writing, including Sea Room and The Sea Is Not Made of Water. Life Between the Tides combines close scientific observation with a writer's attention to place and time, producing a portrait of the intertidal zone as a world complete in itself.
