Todd Hido has spent more than twenty years photographing the American suburbs at night, motels, interiors, and the women who appear in his work as figures caught between the domestic and the unknown. Intimate Distance gathers twenty-five years of his photographs into a single survey volume, including his best-known series — the suburban exteriors shot from a car window in rain and artificial light, the motel rooms, the isolated houses — alongside less widely seen work and several series in full for the first time. This revised and expanded edition updates the original Aperture monograph with additional material from recent years.
Hido's photographs are quiet and formally controlled, and the book is organized to move between series in a way that emphasizes the continuities in his practice rather than presenting each project in isolation. Essays by Evan Harris and an interview with the artist are included. A standard reference in American color photography.
