With a Bird, A Reader on Avian Kinship

This book is an anthology edited by Marjolein van der Loo. This volume initiates a cross-disciplinary discussion about the human relationship with birds. The book is the second in a five-volume series from the publisher Onomatopee. It presents birds as kin—beings with their own histories, desires, and ways of knowing—rather than simple metaphors or objects of curiosity in an environment of ecological change.   

The contributions cover several formats, including critical ornithology, speculative fiction, visual art, and personal essays. Content explores the human-bird connection across areas like myth, science, migration, and dream. The book draws on decolonial, feminist, and ecological approaches to challenge existing ideas about nature. The overall aim is to promote care, reciprocity, and new forms of relationship with the avian world.
