Board Game Art Show and First Anniversary

Earlier in December, we hosted a Board Game art show while also celebrating Another Corner's first birthday! For the show, we invited 10 local artists to participate and create artworks inspired by their favorite board games. To celebrate the shop's first anniversary, we asked Bask Bakery to create a cake for the occasion - Otto shaped, and lemon and vanilla flavored! Below are photos from the event (shot by Anthony Ali) and descriptions of the pieces in the show.

Logan Decarme: Worthy Opponents
Designed + Screen Printed, Soy Based Candle Yummy Scented Just two guys having a time, they don’t know how to play the game, neither do I.
Polly Garwood: Scurry
Nestled in a wooded wonderland, little rats must quest their way to the magical home tree - an ancient hollow tree where all who enter are welcome and treated with respect. Made as an homage to my favorite board and tabletop games.

Palmer Purcell: Beneath the Grass
In a small suburban town people have started to notice strange bugs coming from their yards. Secretly a nearby corporation has been dumping toxic waste into a stream that’s now infected the town's water supply. After years of this happening, strange mutations have occurred in the wildlife and have created completely new insects. With this toxic ecosystem expanding, they must fight off other creatures coming in to take their food! Assemble your team of organisms, and take turns trying to knock the opponents creatures over to be able to live another day in the toxic landscape of backyard suburbia!

Janice Kim: Read Between The Pieces
POV oil painting. Playing chess with a friend at a park.
Sam Winfield: Frequency of player position in playtest #8.
An abstract data viz that uses dots to represent the frequency of each player's position on a game board, across a single playtest for a prototype game.

Megan Smock: Play Date Halma
This piece is inspired by the game Stern-Halma, which I loved to play with my family as a kid. Rather than the six standard colored pegs, the board has six families of various hand carved wooden creatures to play with.
Kate Catinella: Catalog of Ailments
A watercolor specimen plate of extractions from Cavity Sam, archived for medical study.
Liam Collins: Game Night
A custom dice popper that portrays the chaotic and playful nature of “game night”.

Emily Burtner: untitled (Parcheesi Board)
24x24” quilted game board, upcycled cotton, flannel, studio scraps, and poly-organza.
Jill Adler: I Knew I Was About To Lose
Whether it's a newly-released game or a classic, what I remember most about playing board games is who I played them with. Board games can bring out the competitive sides of people, especially people who are otherwise very collected. Both of these points lead me to this piece, which recreates the aftermath of a particularly frustrating game of chess I played with my dad many years ago. The handmade board consists of a screenprint on paper, book board, and book cloth, and the pieces are molded & painted handmade paper.

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for this wonderful evening! The show is up through the end of the month. Happy holidays!
