Drift Volume 13 explores the kiezkultur—the neighborhood culture—of Berlin. The German capital has become a magnet for young creatives from all over the world, making it one of Europe's most vibrant metropolises where a multinational cast has made its home in every corner of the city, bringing unique perspectives, new purposes, and the third wave of coffee.
From Oderbergerstrasse in Kollwitzkiez to Friedelstrasse in Reuterkiez, these pages introduce the many people and places that make Berlin not only an exciting place to be creative, but an increasingly better place to drink coffee. The issue features a Dutchman who earned the nickname "Probat whisperer" at one of the city's longest-running roasters, kaffeklatch at three Berlin cafes, Neukölln's zero-waste coffee shops, a march through history from the Prussian empire through the Cold War into modern-day cafes, coffee shops as gathering places for Berlin's Jewish culture, and the story of an airfield that saved Berliners in 1948.
