Two Brazilian photographers offer complementary visions of how football permeates Brazilian landscape, cityscape, and daily life. Leonardo Finotti's series Campos Sagrados (Sacred Fields) is an aerial survey of football fields throughout Brazil, photographed from elevated vantage points that reveal their integration into neighborhoods rich and poor, industrial zones, urban peripheries, and rural countryside. His consistent perspective creates a typological inventory showing both the ubiquity of football infrastructure and the remarkable diversity of contexts in which it appears. Ed Viggiani's series Brasileiros Futebol Clube takes the opposite approach, working at ground level to photograph his fellow Brazilians everywhere they play football or follow their teams.
Together, the two bodies of work demonstrate the book's central argument: in Brazil, if there's no ball, people kick fruit or cans; when there's no field, they make one. Football literally shapes the soul of the Brazilian people and the physical landscape they inhabit. A book for readers interested in football culture, Brazilian society, documentary photography, or how sports infrastructure reflects social priorities.
