In the early 1970s, two players emerged from opposite ends of the basketball spectrum and quietly began rewriting what the sport could look like. Julius Erving—Dr. J—brought an airborne elegance to the game that no one had seen before. Moses Malone arrived straight from high school, bypassing the college system entirely, and ground out his place in the game through sheer physical will. Both found their footing in the ABA, a league built for exactly this kind of invention.
